Raw Milk Advocate Max Kane speaks
Joanne: Hello. Welcome to Joanne Unleashed. Today’s guest is Max Kane. He’s an advocate of raw milk, and he’s coming under a lot of fire by our government. In this interview he’s going to be talking about his health problems and how he recovered with raw milk and raw meat. He’s also going go share a lot of information on his views on the role of bacteria. This is a paradigm that most people are completely unaware of, and you do not want to miss this interview. So welcome.
Max: Thanks for having me.
Joanne: Tell me about the health problems that you had when you were younger.
Max: I grew up in the metropolis known as Chicago, so my body was bombarded with a lot of industrial pollution through the air and the water. My diet was extremely processed. I grew up on the average American diet, they call it the SAD diet where you’re eating fast food, and microwaved foods and so forth. At the age of ten my body completely broke down where it started expressing symptoms. It couldn’t handle the toxic load any more. The symptoms were terrible. Severe joint pain. Weight loss. I was wasting away. My skin was extremely pale and dry. I looked like one of those zombies from Night of the Living Dead. If you can imagine one of those zombies in a Nazi death camp. So I went to a medical doctor. They ran their tests and stamped me with a label. They said I had Crohn’s disease and it incurable, and they didn’t know exactly what caused it. I was really scared at the time. But they offered some relief through some medication which, due to my ignorance, I thought was a great idea at the time. I started taking medication. I was medicated for about ten years. After ten years I realized I wasn’t getting any results, and I was taking these pills every day. I was very committed to taking the pills. I have some friends in the inner city who sold crack, actually, and I was making an analogy through my mind how I myself was like a crack head, except going to the corner in the ghetto, I was going to Walgreen’s every month to get my pills. Through that analogy I started looking to the alternative realm. I was doing okay financially at the time, so I started buying more expensive food and shopping at Whole Foods. That’s where I learned about organic food for the first time. I never knew what it was. And then from there my education just progressed and evolved into more of a natural foods, unprocessed foods diet. Then in my mid-twenties I started adhering to a totally unprocessed food diet, which means a raw diet—animal-based as opposed to vegan and vegetarian—so a lot of raw meat, eggs, dairy, vegetables as well. It’s like an all raw food, omnivorous-based diet leaning toward carnivorous. And there’s not really much material out about that as far as reading material. Except there are a couple good books by an author, Aajonus Vonderplanitz. He has two books: one called We Want to Live and the other called The Recipe for Living Without Disease. Other than that, no one’s really published on the subject except there was a cat study done by Francis Pottenger, Jr. back in the thirties, but that was on cats, never on humans eating raw meat. So I started that diet and my health totally turned around. I stopped taking all medication. I put on over 80 pounds of healthy, athletic weight. I’ve been asymptomatic for multiple years now, and I’m in total control of my health.
Joanne: What got you going into raw meat? Was it after reading that book? Or did you just naturally…
Max: No, no. I got into the raw meat before. I used to play professional billiards, and some of the people I played with were Filipino. They took me out to this sushi place, and it was the first time I ever had raw meat. It was raw fish. And I was kind of squeamish. But these were good friends of mine; I didn’t want to insult their culture. So I’m eating this raw salmon. This is like back in my early twenties before I even became conscious of nutrition. That was my first experience with raw meat. But then later when I saw this first nutritionist in my mid-twenties, his name was Jim Marlow, he was the one who suggested eating raw meat. I just ran with that idea, and my body flourished, my health flourished. It was really against everything they tell you. The whole paradigm about bacteria causing disease is not founded, according to my experience. It’s almost the exact opposite that bacteria aid disease—they help you rebuilt your body—and chemicals cause disease. So I’ve been doing my best to stay toxic-free and bacteria-heavy.

"Raw Meat Made Me Feel Phenomenal!"
The way eating raw meat made me feel was phenomenal! Just after three days my body order went away, my hair was nice and soft, the oil in my hair was not making me feel dirty like I have to shampoo everyday. My skin felt softer, my teeth felt stronger, as my body did and my legs. My toothache went away! I thought I would have to have another root canal. But, wow I can’t believe it, raw meat is a natural painkiller! I was waking up fully in my body and not groggy. However I was a little giddy and I loved myself more. If this is the only side effect than wow, give me raw meat every day! Plus, eating raw meat seems to have helped me to regulate my hormones. I really like not being over emotional and needy. I just feel fantastic! How wonderful is that? Life is so wonderful! I love life even more.

The Primal Diet restores health and life - a prime example
Mom Enjoys a Bowl of Bison
Last fall, my 87-year-old Mom was hospitalized for a ten-day period during which time she became quite weak and stopped walking. After the hospitalization, I was naturally concerned about her nutrition. Having been myself on the Primal Diet for three and a half years, I felt confident that the diet could help anyone. And whenever possible, I give my mom these foods. At the same time, I was well aware of the supposed dangers of giving an elderly person raw foods, including raw dairy, meat, and honey—especially after an illness—and naturally did not want to put my mother at risk in any way.
At this first stage of her healing, Mom was primarily bedridden and couldn’t get around without a wheelchair or walker. She had no appetite, or ate with little relish and would often stop eating after a few bites. On palpating her stomach, I found a great deal of tension. Her skin was very dry, and seemed to hang loosely on her arms. She expressed little interest in the people or events around her, and was in constant pain.
It occurred to me that Mom was starving, so I decided to feed her as much of the diet as she would eat. I began with small frequent meals, including coconut butter; a green drink with cream; an egg smoothie made with kefir, honey, and green banana; small bites of raw, buttered cheese (sometimes with honey as well); and chocolate candies (carob, honey, and butter). She ate everything, savored it, and commented often on how tasty things were.
(Yet why should I be surprised at Mom’s enthusiasm over this food? She grew up on a farm and always had access to raw milk, cream, butter, and cheese. Her family had no refrigeration--everything was kept in running well water, in the milk house that her dad built. She’s always said that’s why she has such great teeth and bones!)
The next day, I mixed (with a fork) a heaping tablespoon each of raw butter, honey, and a scant one of cream with a half-cup of raw ground bison, as well as a little egg. When Mom asked, “What is it?” my past flashed before my eyes, including vivid memories of Mom’s admonitions to wash my hands after cutting raw meats. Many concerns as well as questions of honesty arose, yet I thought about how good I felt on the diet, and how much I wanted her to regain her former vitality. So I responded: “Yorkshire Pudding. Do you want some?” She did. Since it was a little messy (the egg), I fed her the first bite. Her response was “Oh my God, that is so good!” And to my amazement, began to eat it as fast as I could feed her, delighting over every bite.
For the next few days of my visit she ate everything with great relish, and especially the ground bison, which always drew exclamations of delight (I often had to make seconds). I have kept with this protocol on subsequent visits. During that time, I did many other things as well, including reading to Mom, singing with her, giving her massage, and playing good music. She responded by leaps and bounds. Within two months, I felt confident to bring her to my home for a five-day visit (something I had thought would never happen again). She was walking on her own by then, having regained strength, balance, and muscle tone, though sometimes still needing an arm to lean on.
I am so grateful for the diet, as it may have saved Mom’s life. Yet equally important, I believe it gave her the sustenance she needed to walk again, and to relax, laugh, converse, and once again express interest in those around her. These past few months have been a rich time for me, for Mom, and for the whole family. I want to thank Aajonus for his dedication to the diet, and for his unique understanding of wellness, as it gave me the insight I needed to support my mom in her healing journey.

Mom recently drew again, for the first time in ten years. In a conversation with her great-granddaughter, she expressed interests and asked questions in a way that I hadn’t heard for years.

The Primal Diet - is it the most appropriate diet for all mankind?
Some weeks after my initial inquiry, I am compelled to give my view
as many others have done before me. After reading dozens of
testimonials relating to your nutritional advice and discovering
the Primal diet blog, I have summoned the courage to speak (I'm a
little shy).
It seems that for most of us who are conscious of our nutritional
protocol, the journey towards the Primal diet follows a remarkably
similar path. One's initial inquiries into nutritional knowledge
tend to reveal the obvious flaws in the macronutrient profiles
of the mainstream diets, such as low fat, low carb, high protein,
all forms of vegetarianism and various other 'extreme' examples of
'macro' manipulation. Upon the failure of these diets, most broaden
their knowledge on the subject by focusing on the less mainstream
information loosely based on the 'principles' derived from the
works of the 'traditional' types (Price and Pottenger) such as
Sally Fallon, Loren Cordain (paleo) etc., and even the more
abstract findings on enzyme nutrition published by the likes of
Dr.Edward Howell. It is here that the raw food spark is ignited,
but sadly at these crossroads, many are misled by the 'common
knowledge' that raw animal products, particularly meat, cannot be
be included in such a diet, and consequently, the raw vegan/
fruitarian approach is adopted. The evolution may stop here for a
while, as many believe this to be the ultimate human diet, but
subtle changes in body chemistry are occurring and soon the sense
that an important component is lacking becomes apparent. For me
personally, this is not quite where The Primal Diet steps in, for
that missing component of my diet was instinctively known to be
raw meat. However I needed confirmation before I attempted to
consume this 'dangerous delicacy'. The Primal Diet literature
gave me the confidence to do so, and hence has been the most
influential and single most important discovery of my dietary
evolution. I have now followed the Primal Diet for 2 years.
Aajonus, you are the bearer of the the most valuable,
scientifically fascinating, and biologically appropriate diet
for humankind. Please know that I am forever grateful for your
work, and that I intend to promote your work here in Australia
(with your permission).
Thanks again,
Scott W.- Sydney, Australia.

Chronic Fatigue & Hpoglycemia Improves With Raw Diet
I felt food was making us sick. I spent 10 yrs eating clean square meal diet of cooked meat, fruits & vegetables. I was not satisfied with that, because I had chronic fatigue & hypoglycemia really bad. The hypoglycemia affected me because my blood sugar was constantly dropping, making me irritable and overemotional.
I constantly had to make sure that I ate at a certain time all day every day 24/7 or I would crash. It was very restrictive and I was very sensitive. I was introduced to one kind of raw foods diet by some sites, and decided to become a vegetarian, then I felt fruitarian would be easy and better. I had met a person who had been a fruitarian for over 35 years so I started to emulate him.
I was a fruitarian for seven months before I finally was so malnourished and deficient that I thought I was going to die. My heart was beating out of my chest, I was hyperventilating and my body was in "alarm" mode - anything I tried to do differently, my whole body would react. This sent me to the hospital....I knew being a fruitarian was too extreme.
I was about to go back to the cooked food, when I talked to someone who mentioned Aajonus to me. I went to his website. I read his testimony about raw meat and raw dairy, within 20 minutes, I knew that I knew. That was my problem right there. I had never heard of that, my family had never heard of that, everyone thinks you've lost it.
I was craving it. I was malnourished and in starvation mode. After the first seven days I knew for sure this was what I was supposed to do. Then I met with Aajonus to make sure I knew what I was doing this time. In the past I had just gone off without anybody who knew what I was
doing.I went to my naturopath as well because he had been my naturopath for years. I knew he wouldn't steer me wrong. He said "Norma, do not be ashamed of raw meat." He Oked this diet.
Now it has been a year and two months. My weight has balanced, which I severely needed. All my conditions have improved. I am much stronger, with more clarity; my memory has improved.I have had various detoxification periods all of which were definitely worth it. By sticking to it and not quitting, but doing what Aajonus had said, I would come out of it at a new level. Now each bad condition is either much better or has gone altogether.
After this last detox period, I was able to jump up and down and dance a lot. I could dance so much better without any stiffness in my knees. Now I know that nothing is acceptable other than the raw food diet because in this generation and the world we live in... our food is so toxic that we have to be extreme. Most significantly Aajonus' diet has calmed
me and made me much less emotional and more focused, more determined and more tolerant of people in my life, including co-workers and family... My children are better off. That is one of my motivating factors: I want to be the best I can for the people around me because I know my behavior affects people around me."
